February 10, 2005: The latest Pentax waterproof digicam, the Optio WP, has a 5-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens and 2-inch LCD monitor.
Tested for use in damp and dusty conditions, the Optio WP can withstand immersion in water up to 1.5 metres deep for approximately 30 minutes, making it ideal for snorkellers and boating enthusiasts. Its slim, flat body makes it readily pocketable and its all-up weight (with battery and card) is only 135 grams. The Optio WP’s lens has an equivalent focal length of 38-114mm in 35mm format and contains aspherical elements to minimise aberrations. Up to 4x digital zoom is available.
A dedicated Green button sets the camera for point-and-shoot operation and photographers can allocate up to four frequently-used functions to the Green button for use as short cuts. A special Mode palette allows users to select from 20 icons to display for simplified selection of camera settings. Up to 125 of these icons can be displayed simultaneously and users can select the order in which they are displayed and change any five icons at a time. The mode palette can also be used to simplify image playback.
Sound clips up to 20 seconds long can be recorded with still images, beginning before the shutter is released and ending after the shot is captured. Video clips can be recorded in QVGA or QQVGA resolution at 15 fps with sound.
The Optio WP also includes several in-camera functions. Users can add one of three pre-installed photo frames to shots, reclaim files that were erased accidentally and edit movie clips. In-camera red-eye compensation is also available. Due for release in March, the Optio WP is expected to retail for $599. For more information go to www.crkennedy.com.au.
