October 2003: The new Pentax Optio 555 adds an under-$1000 model to the 5-megapixel digicam market. Priced at $995, it features a smc Pentax 5x optical zoom lens with a focal length range equivalent to 37.5-187.5mm in 35mm format and is supported by 4x digital zoom capability. Close-up shooting is available to within 2 cm of a subject and an infinity/landscape mode is provided for capturing scenic shots with maximum depth of field.

The main control dial includes P, A, S and M shooting modes, along with panorama assist, 3D image, movie and voice recording and user-adjustable modes. In addition, the Optio 555 has nine selectable Picture modes that preset the camera for optimum results in conditions such as surf & snow, fireworks, night scenes and text capture. Users can also apply B&W and sepia digital filters, along with red, pink. Purple, blue, green and yellow colour effects and there’s a soft focus filter for portraiture.
The built-in auto flash has four selectable modes plus flash output adjustment to prevent over-exposure of close-up subjects. Wide and Spot AF options are provided, along with focus area selection for five horizontal and vertical points. Multi-segment, centre-weighted and spot metering have also been included.
The white balance control includes six pre-sets, along with an auto setting and custom white balance control and sensitivity levels can be set from ISO 64 to ISO 400.
