March 11, 2006: The new Olympus Tough 720SW, which goes on sale this month, is a compact. pocketable digicam that is waterproof to a depth of three metres and can withstand a drop of 1.5 metres.
Equipped with a 7.1-megapixel CCD sensor and 3x optical zoom lens (38-114mm in 35mm format), the Tough 720SW has a 2.5-inch LCD screen, which doubles as a viewfinder. Up to 5x digital zoom is supported and the camera comes with 19.1MB of internal memory plus an xD-Picture Card slot. The camera’s metal body has clean lines and is small enough to slip into a pocket. It comes in silver and Polar Blue. Other features include Olympus’s proprietary Bright Capture Technology and TruePIC TURBO image processing system.
The Tough 720SW comes with 28 selectable shooting modes, a built-in help guide to assist novice users and an easy-to-use menu interface. In-camera editing functions include red-eye fix, resizing, adding frames or text and colour brightness or saturation adjustments. The autofocus system has a working range from 0.5 metres to infinity, with macro shooting available from 20-5 cm and a Super Macro mode covering from 7 to 50 cm. Program AE metering is provided and sensitivity can be adjusted between ISO 64 and 1600, with ISO 2500 available in the Available Light Portrait and Candle shooting modes.
Still pictures are recorded in JPEG format, while movie clips can be captured in QuickTime Motion JPEG format with WAV sound. The camera has a top video resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 15 frames/second. The supplied LI-42B rechargeable lithium ion battery provides power for approximately 200 shots and the camera can support continuous shooting at up to 3.7 frames per second for up to 12 frames.
