February 25, 2005: Olympus has added a next-generation model to its popular Mju Digital camera range.
The new Mju Digital 500, which is expected to sell for $599, has a 5-megapixel CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5-inch, high-definition hypercrystal LCD monitor that offers a wide viewing angle. Its silver body features the ‘Top Shell Barrier’ design that was first introduced on the Mju mini plus the all-weather construction that has characterised that Mju camera line-up.
The lens covers the same angles of view as a 35-105mm lens on a 35mm camera and has aspherical elements to minimise aberrations. Its normal focus range is from 50 cm to infinity but close-up shooting is possible to 20 cm in macro mode or 7 cm with the Super Macro setting. The Mju Digital 500 supports both Digital ESP and spot metering as well as live and playback histogram displays. Shutter speeds range from ½ to 1/1000 second with exposures of up to four seconds possible in Night Scene mode.
Two new ‘Shoot & Select’ settings have been added to the Scene Programs menu, making it easier to capture moving subjects. Two new Underwater modes are provided for wide-angle and macro shooting, bringing the total number of Scene Program modes to 20. The new camera also benefits from TruePic TURBO image processing and automatic noise reduction in Night Scene mode.
