Nikon is about to release its first F-Mount autofocus DX-Nikkor interchangeable lens, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED, which has been designed exclusively for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras. (It is not suitable for use on 35mm camera bodies.)

The new lens is the first in a special category of lenses that have been optimised for Nikon’s 23.7 x 15.6mm digital sensor format and features a smaller image circle than Nikon”s 35mm lenses. The combination of reduced picture angle and smaller lens diameter has resulted in a compact barrel design and premium performance for ultra-wide angle photography.

The new DX Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G lens will provide an angle-of-view that ranges from 61 degrees at 24mm to 99 degrees at 12mm, which is comparable with that of a 18-36mm lens on a 35mm camera. Technological features include Nikon”s Super Integrated Coating, Silent Wave Motor Technology (SWM) and a G-Type design that will be compatible with the Command Dial aperture control on all D-series cameras.

The new lens will also include Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass to control chromatic aberration, aspheric optics to enable a more compact optical design and internal focusing to maintain superior handling. It will have its first public showing at the PMA International Trade Show in Las Vegas in late February/early March 2003 and is scheduled to become available in Australia in April or May.
