November 28, 2007: Nikon has released software that allows users to add the three D2X/D2XS Colour mode settings to the Picture Controls on D300 and D3 cameras and extended Windows Vista support for both DSLRs.
According to Nikon’s website, when these optional Picture Controls are registered with the D300 digital-SLR camera, which supports the Picture Control System, colour reproduction simulating that of the D2X and D2XS is possible. Custom Picture Controls can also be created based on these optional Picture Controls. The three D2X modes have the following effects:
– D2XMODE1 simulates colour reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Colour mode setting of I. Skin tones and gradations are reproduced naturally with rich reproduction of tones;
– D2XMODE2 simulates color reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Colour mode setting of II. This optional Picture Control is suited to images that will be extensively processed or retouched;
– D2XMODE3 simulates colour reproduction at a D2X/D2XS Colour mode setting of III. Choose for nature or landscape shots. Greens and blues are vividly reproduced.
The software can be downloaded from http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/. Installation instructions are provided.
Nikon has also released a software plug-in for 32-bit versions of Windows Vista that supports NEF.RAW files from the D300 and D3 cameras. Go to http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/ for the download.
