Targeted at ‘mid-range’ photographers, the Nikon 1 J5 features a redesigned body that is more rounded than its predecessor, the Nikon 1 J4 and has a distinct grip moulding. Like its predecessors (and all Nikon 1 cameras) the new camera’s sensor measures 13.2  x 8.8 mm, which applies a crop factor of 2.7x (compared with 35mm sensors). Thirteen C-mount lenses are currently available. The tilting touch screen LCD monitor makes the camera useable for shooting ‘selfies’, while built-in Wi-Fi and NFC-support allow sharing via a smart device.

The Nikon 1 J5 comes with the next-generation EXPEED 5A image processor, which supports continuous shooting at up to approximately 20 frames per second (fps) with autofocus. It supports ISO settings from 160 to 12800 with manual and Auto ISO control. Advanced  noise reduction is available with high ISO settings and 12-bit NEF.RAW capture is provided.  The 171-point AF system includes 105 phase action points for locking onto action precisely. PASM controls are provided, along with 14 effects for stills and movies, five different scene modes and seven new effects including Pop, Skin softening and Retro.

A new Sports mode enables users to ‘freeze’ action without requiring manual selection of settings. The Nikon 1 J5 also offers seven new Creative modes as well as a Glamour Retouch setting. Selective Colour and Cross Process modes can also now be used with movie recording. Movies can be recorded in 4K (3840 ø— 2160/15p) ultra high-definition or Full HD resolution. 4K movies can be up to ten minutes in length and the camera also includes a new time-lapse feature.

The Nikon 1 J5 is due for release on 23 April. It will be offered in two colour combinations/white body with a silver lens, or the silver/black body with a silver lens. The kit lens is the 1 Nikkor VR 10″“30mm f/3.5″“5.6 PD-ZOOM lens. Pricing will be at retailers’ discretion. For more information visit https://mynikonlife.com.au/j5.
