April 21, 2005: Nikon has just published details of its latest ‘pro-sumer’ interchangeable-lens DSLR cameras, the D50 and D70s.
The metering system in the D70s offers more selections, while the D50’s AF system has higher levels of automation. Although both models support simultaneous recording of NEF (RAW) and JPEG data for the same shot, the D50 has a top burst speed/capacity of 2.5 frames/second (fps) in bursts of up to 137 frames, while the D70s supports 3 fps for up to 144 consecutive shots. The D70s also has a faster top shutter speed of 1/8000 second, while the D50 stops at 1/4000 sec. In both cameras, flash synch is at 1/500 sec. Both models come with USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) support but only the D70s has a depth-of-field preview button and on-demand grid lines in the viewfinder display. It also supports iTTL Balanced Fill Flash with compatible Speedlights.
