November 2003: The Nikon Club has embarked on a series of “Nikon School by Correspondence” courses covering traditional and digital photography.
The courses are based on the successful Nikon School programs, which have been conducted in capital cities by Nikon Club for 15 years. They will combine monthly lecture notes posted to participants with set assignments that are assessed and then returned by the tutorial team, which is led by Philip Andrews. Andrews, who lectures and writes on digital imaging, photography and multimedia, is the author of seven books, including The Digital Photography Manual and Adobe Photoshop Elements: A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging.
The two first courses Introductory Photography and Introduction to Digital will commence in February 2004 and run for six months. An advanced Beyond the Basics course will begin from July 2004. Introduction to Photography covers familiarisation camera systems, focus and depth-of-field control, professional techniques for special effects, lighting and composition techniques and presentation of images. Introduction to Digital outlines how digital cameras work and the steps in the imaging process, from capture to download and then printing of a digital image. The course also looks at scanning and provides a comprehensive introduction to imaging editing software and the key tools required to correct, manipulate and enhance images prior to printing.
Students will be provided with website links and a booklist recommending photographers, location ideas and advanced techniques. Each month the best work will be featured on a special web gallery to facilitate the sharing of ideas, style, techniques and problem-solving, and promote a community “campus” atmosphere among the correspondence students. Following successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate and the three top students will receive a prize and publication of their photos in Light Reading, the Nikon Club’s prestigious quarterly magazine.
The courses are each being offered at a special ‘early bird’ price of just $399 to Nikon Club members until the end of December. For details go to www.maxwell.com.au.
