February 15, 2011: Nikon has updated its Coolpix camera range with new additions to the P, L and S series.
Two new models have been added to the P-series range of multi-function, high-performance: the 12.2-megapixel P300 and 12.1-megapixel P500. Pricing for these models has still to be determined. Both cameras are equipped with 6.16 x 4.62 mm backside-illumination CMOS sensors and high-quality Nikkor lenses. Both can record Full HD movies (1920 x 1080 pixels) and are compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. They also have high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitors with 921,000 dots and five levels of brightness adjustment.

The P300 features a fast f/1.8-4.9, 4.3-17.9mm 4.2x optical zoom lens equivalent to a 24-100mm lens in 35mm format. This lens can focus to 3 cm in macro mode or to 30 cm at the wide-angle position or 60 cm with telephoto. ISO sensitivity ranges from 160 to 3200, with auto gain to ISO 1600. The P300 comes with 90MB of internal memory.
The Coolpix P500 boasts a 4.0-144mm f/3.4-5.7 (36x optical zoom) lens with angles of view equivalent to 22.5-810mm in 35mm format. Its normal focusing range of 50 cm to infinity (W) or 2.2 metres to infinity (T) can be extended to 10 cm in macro mode and down to 1 cm when F lights in green and the zoom indicator is on the wide-angle position of K. The LCD monitor can be tilted 82 degrees down or 90 degrees up for shooting flexibility. Approximately 102 MB of internal memory is provided.

The latest in the L-series range, the L120 and L23, are powered by AA batteries and provide simple operation for novice photographers. The Coolpix L120 (RRP $299) is a 14.1-megapixel, 21x optical zoom model with a 3-inch LCD monitor. The Coolpix L23 (RRP $99) is an entry-level, 10.1-megapixel model with a 5x optical zoom lens and enhanced automatic functions.

Five new S-series models have been announced, incorporating backside-illumination CMOS sensors effective pixel counts of up to 16-million pixels, a slim new 18x zoom Nikkor lens and a convenient touch panel monitor. The Coolpix S9100 is a high-performance model with an 18x zoom lens and support for recording Full HD movies. The Coolpix S6100 features a touch panel LCD monitor and 16-megapixel resolution. Pricing for these models is still to be determined.

The Coolpix S4100 (RRP $229) and S3100 (RRP $179) are even slimmer than their predecessors, the S4000 and S3000, and offer improved zoom functions. The Coolpix S4100 will be offered in black only, with the S3100 coming in black, bluem purple and silver. The Coolpix S2500 (RRP $139) is available in black and pink and provides basic camera functions. All cameras have different on sale dates and will be in stores from the end of February onwards.
