Replacing the FX-format D810, the D850 comes with a 45.7-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, which together enable the camera to support continuous shooting at up to 9-fps. The new camera also claims an extended dynamic range with native sensitivity settings from ISO 64 to 25600 (expandable from Lo 1 [ISO 32] to Hi 2 [ISO 102400]) plus an extended low metering limit. Full-frame 4K UHD video capabilities are available, along with 4x and 5x slow-motion videos in Full HD resolution plus 8K time-lapse movie production using interval timer photography. Movies can be recorded in either FX or DX format, the latter providing a 1.5x crop magnification to the effective focal length of the lens. A dedicated movie menu allows easy switching between movie and still functions.

The D850 features a 153-point AF system with 99 cross sensors to achieve high subject acquisition plus an AF detection range that extends down to -4 EV. The camera also allows RAW batch processing, exposure metering range expansion, and a peaking function that enables accurate manual focusing. New functions include Pinpoint AF for live view photography that reduces the focusing area to one quarter for the normal AF area plus a Natural Light Auto option that provides more accurate colour reproduction in available lighting.

A high-resolution tilting 3.2-inch touch-screen monitor with 2,359,000 dots enables shots to be taken from varying angles, while button illumination is helpful when shooting in dark situations. A new focus shift capability makes it easy to acquire images for focus stacking by allowing the camera to automatically take up to 300 shots while moving focus position from a designated starting point to infinity. A selection of up to 10 levels of focus distance changes can be made, while interval between shots can be set between 0 and 30 seconds. Continuous shooting of up to 5ps is supported, along with exposure smoothing and silent photography.
The D850 will be available from September 2017 with the AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens, or with the body-only configuration. Nikon doesn’t release pricing information but the USA MSRP for the camera body is US$3299.95. For more information visit http://www.mynikonlife.com.au/.
