The new camera is being manufactured in three body colours (black, red and bronze) and features an adjustable LCD monitor  with 921,000 dots, which opens horizontally from 0 ° to 180 ° and flips up and down from +180 ° to -90 °. The new Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor supports wide ISO sensitivity range, high-speed readout during live view and Full HD movie recording. It’s partnered with an EXPEED 3  image-processing engine, equivalent to that of higher-end models such as the D4.

This processor can support a native ISO sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 6400, which is expandable to Hi 1 (ISO 12800 equivalent) and Hi 2 (ISO 25600 equivalent).  Superior high-sensitivity performance is also available for D-Movie recording. Active D-Lighting is also supported and the D5200 employs a new image-processing system that  minimises colour shifts when processing strength is increased. HDR (High Dynamic Range) recording is also available.

The Scene Recognition System determines the subject’s situation accurately prior to shooting and the D5200 analyses brightness and colour information with Nikon’s original Scene Recognition System’s 2016-pixel RGB sensor. Metered information is applied to autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash and auto white balance control. 3D-tracking enables the AF system to track moving subjects accurately.  The D5200 uses the Multi-CAM 4800DX autofocus sensor module, the same as in the D7000.  Four selectable AF modes are provided and users can choose how the focus point for autofocus is selected according to the subject in viewfinder  .

Continuous shooting is available at up to five frames/second, with the option of a 3 fps setting which is optimal for capturing natural facial expressions.   Up to 100 JPEGs can be recorded in a burst.

The D5200 comes with seven built-in Special Effects: Colour sketch, Miniature effect, Selective colour, Silhouette, Night vision, High key and Low key. These effects can be applied to still images and movies and also to still images after shooting using retouch menus. Sixteen Scene pre-sets are also included: Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, Night portrait, Night landscape, Party/indoor, Beach/snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Pet portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn colours and Food. A built-in iTTL flash is provided for illuminating backlit subjects.

Wireless image transfer is supported via the optional Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a. Full camera specifications are available at http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d5200/spec.htm. Nikon Australia’s PR agency has provided no information on pricing or local availability
