June 4, 2006: Nikon has announced changes to its roll-out plans for the next generation of camera control and raw file processing software that will see them released closer to the release date for the recently-announced D2Xs DSLR camera.

Capture NX software, which has been developed through a co-operative and investment agreement with Nikon and Nikon is now scheduled for release in July. The new release is a full image editing application that can be used with TIFF and JPEG files from any device. It can also convert NEF-RAW files from Nikon-branded DSLRs, including the D2Xs. Initial shipments will be in Japan and the USA, where the RRP will be $US174.95. Upgrade price for owners of Capture 4 will be $US89.95. View Pro software, a fast, versatile image browser with full screen display and FTP data transfer, is still in development. The new release date has yet to be announced.

Nikon has also unveiled a new Camera Control Pro application, which lets D2Xs camera users control the camera via a wired or wireless connection. This will replace the current Capture Control module in Nikon Capture, which will not support the D2Xs, although it will still support other Nikon DSLRs back to the D1. This application is expected to ship in the USA in July at an RRP of $US79.95. New Image Authentication Software is also being released to enable users of the D2Xs to verify that their images – and the metadata associated with them – have not been tampered with. This Windows-only software will not be compatible with files from earlier Nikon DSLRs.
