December 2003: Nikon has revealed preliminary details of its new D70 interchangeable-lens digital SLR camera, which will carry “a popular price users will find within reach”. Featuring the Nikon F mount that ensures compatibility with existing Nikkor lenses and the Nikon DX Format, which involves a 1.5x lens multiplier factor, the D70 is expected to be priced to compete with Canon’s EOS 300D. The D70 will be showcased at the PMA International Trade Show in Las Vegas in mid-February and should go on sale in the first half of 2004. Although full specifications have not been published, it is probable that the new camera will use the same 6-megapixel sensor as the D100. Released concurrently with the D70 will be a new DX Zoom-Nikkor lens, “developed at the same time as a best match for the D70”. Details of this lens have yet to be revealed. We will publish updated information on this site as it becomes available.
