November 12, 2009: WD has released two new external hard drives, the ultra-portable My Passport Elite and the My Book Elite desktop drive.
The new My Passport Elite drives are available now in three appealing colours: Metallic Red, Metallic Blue and Charcoal Metallic. They come in three capacities: 320GB (RRP $149.99), 500GB: (RRP $199.99) and 640GB(RRP $239.99). Small enough to slip into a pocket, these drives feature an illuminated capacity gauge and drive lock indicator so users can see how much space is left on their drive and whether their data is secure. The drive is password protected with 256-bit hardware-based encryption.. The convenient grab-and-go USB dock frees up valuable desk space and eliminates the search for USB ports.

The new My Book Elite drives have a customisable e-label that’s always visible, even when the drive is unplugged, making it easy to know what’s on the drive and how much space is left. Offered in capacities of 1 TB (RRP $199.99), 1.5 TB (RRP $249.99) and 2 TB (RRP $399.99), these drives also feature automatic and continuous backup with WD SmartWare software and 256-bit hardware-based encryption.

The e-label smart display on the spine of the My Book drives can be changed easily and as often as desired. The e-paper technology reads as easily as ink on paper and the included WD SmartWare software lets users create a label to name their drive or remind themselves of its contents. The information on the display remains clearly visible, even when the drive is unplugged.
Both drives are supplied with integrated WD SmartWare software. When the drive is plugged in for the first time, the first backup process launches automatically and a real-time visual interface provides a reassuring view of the backup as it happens. After the first backup, users’ files are backed up automatically every time they change or add a file.
