May 2, 2008: Microsoft has released Expression Media 2, the second version of its image organisation, editing and presentation application (which was formerly known as iView MediaPro).
The application includes date recognition and sorting as well as keyword sorting which make it easy to locate wanted images. Integrated search tools allow users to sort through a variety of files and find images, regardless of where they are stored. It also includes geotagging and a new function that allows simultaneous editing and sharing of a group of images. Basic editing functions like resizing, rotating and cropping are available in Expression Media 2 as well as adjustments for brightness, sharpness and colour balance. A light table allows users to view changes and check fine details.
The application is available as a 30-day trial download for Windows and Macintosh computers. It will be offered as a free update to users of Expression Media 1 and MediaPro v3 until 30 June. For more information, visit http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx.
The new ProPhoto Tools for Windows is a free download for 32-bit versions of Windows XP or Vista. It provides flexible geotagging, the ability to edit image metadata and support for most raw file formats. As well as viewing raw images within Pro Photo Tools, you can also update metadata (including GPS coordinates) directly in the file. The updated metadata is stored within the raw file, not in a cumbersome ‘sidecar’ file. For more information, visit http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/articles/tools.aspx.
