June 21, 2011: July will present an exciting month of photography in Sydney when two important shows, World Press Photo 11 and Sydney Morning Herald Photos 1440, open in the State Library of NSW’s Galleries on Saturday, 2 July.
World Press Photo 11 presents over 200 powerful and evocative colour and B&W images by 55 photographers of 23 nationalities, including works by three Australians: Daniel Berehulak, Adam Pretty and Steve Christo. Presented as part of the Canon EOS Festival of Photography, it showcases the world’s best photojournalism from 2010. The coveted World Press Photo of the Year, awarded to South African photographer Jodi Bieber, was selected from a record number of 108,059 images. Her confronting winning portrait is of 18-year-old Bibi Aisha, who was disfigured as retribution for fleeing her husband’s house in Oruzgan province, in the centre of Afghanistan.
In contrast to the often confronting images of World Press, Photos 1440 offers a vibrant and familiar slice of life of Sydneysiders and rural residents at work and play. There are 1440 minutes in a day, represented by more than 100 striking colour images across 10 themes, including daily life, floods, growing up, ocean swimming, greening the bush and sport. Two Photos 1440 events will be held on 14 and 21 July, as part of the Canon EOS Festival of Photography. From 6.30pm to 8pm each night, join award-winning shooters Kate Geraghty, Andrew Meares and Quentin Jones, together with the Herald’s Photographic Editor Sandra Harrison, for insightful discussions on photojournalism. Entry to both exhibitions is free of charge and the galleries are open daily and until 8pm Monday to Thursday. For more information. visit www.sl.nsw.gov.au.
