June 5, 2008: Pentax has announced the impending release of a new standard zoom lens, the smc Pentax-DA 17-70mm F4 AL [IF] SDM, which is designed specifically for Pentax DSLR cameras.
The new lens covers a 4.1x zoom ratio that is equivalent to 26-107mm in 35mm format. The proprietary SDM system, which is driven by a built-in supersonic motor, provides smooth, quiet autofocusing and engages automatically when the lens is fitted to a K20D, K200D, K10D or K100D camera body. Two hybrid aspherical (AL) optical elements are included in the lens design and lens elements are coated to minimise various aberrations. SP (Super Protect) coating is applied to the front surface to repel dust, water and grease. The maximum aperture remains at f/4 throughout the zoom range.
The smc Pentax-DA 17-70mm F4 AL [IF] SDM has a minimum focusing distance of 28 cm across the entire zoom range. Internal focusing allows angle-critical attachments to be used. A Quick-Shift Focus System for instant switching to manual-focus operation without any focus-mode changes, after the subject is captured in focus by the AF system. Pentax lenses are distributed in Australia by C.R. Kennedy & Company. Visit the website at www.crkennedy.com.au for further information.
