October 11, 2005: Olympus has added the new SP-500UZ model, which sports a 6-megapixel CCD sensor and large 2.5-inch monitor, to its extended-zoom range of digital still cameras.
Featuring a fast (f2.8-f3.7) 6.3-63mm lens with a focal length equivalent to 38-380mm in 35mm format, the SP-500 is priced at an RRP of $599 and is scheduled to go on sale this month. Designed for enthusiasts who want to get to the heart of the action, the new model offers a choice of auto exposure or full manual operation with 21 scene modes and aperture- and shutter-priority AE as well. A live histogram display allows users to check exposures both before capture and in playback mode and the sophisticated focusing system offers iESP AF, spot AF and multi-spot AF – selectable from 143 points – plus predictive AF measurement for focusing on moving subjects. A Super Macro mode allows photos to be taken to only 3cm from a subject.
The SP-500 sports an electronic viewfinder with 201,600 pixel resolution for a clear view of scenes. Other features include TruePic TURBO image processing, Auto Bracketing for up to five shots in ±1/3EV increments, and continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second. Images can be stored in RAW or JPEG format and the camera has an internal memory of 10MB plus a slot for removable xD-Picture Cards (sold separately). Movie clips can be captured with sound at resolutions up to VGA size at 30fps to the memory capacity. An optional TCON-17 tele converter extends magnification by a factor of 1.7x , while the camera’s wide angle capabilities can be boosted to 27mm (35mm equivalent) with the WCON-07 converter.
