The Coolpix 4100 combines a compact camera body with a 4-megapixel sensor and 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens to provide a digital camera with wide appeal. Designed for use with SD memory cards, it includes 14.5 MB of internal memory that allows users to take pictures when no card is inserted and copy shots between the internal memory and a card. Fifteen pre-set scene modes (including four with Scene Assistance) are provided to help novice photographers to obtain high-quality shots in a variety of common shooting situations and five colour options (ranging from ‘vivid’ to monochrome) give users a wide choice of in-camera effects. The lens focuses to within 4cm of a subject for dramatic close-ups and movie clips are recorded with sound. The Coolpix 4100 is due for release in July. Pricing has still to be determined.
Nikon is claiming a ‘world’s first’ for its new AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED lens, which is the first f2 lens with Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. The system consists of a suspended lens element coupled with gyroscopic sensors that compensate for accidental vertical or horizontal movement during slow shutter exposures. It can also detect deliberate movement – such as panning – automatically. According to Nikon, the VR system lets photographers shoot at the equivalent of three or more stops slower shutter speed compared to a lens without VR (depending on shooting conditions and the technique of individual photographers).
The new TC-17EII 1.7x teleconverter has been optimised for use with digital cameras but is also suitable for film cameras. Measuring only 66 x 31.5mm and weighing just 250g, it is a lightweight way for photographers to extend their shooting ranges. The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II can communicate with the signals from most Nikkor lenses and is fully compatible with Nikon’s exclusive Vibration Reduction (VR) optics. It also incorporates glass elements that conform to forthcoming environmental standards.
