October 2003: The latest Nikon Coolscan film scanners, which are due for release by the end of the year, features 4000 dpi image quality and fast scanning speeds plus a full suite of image correction and enhancement tools.
Designed for APS and 35mm film scanning, the Coolscan V ED has a high-quality CCD sensor and a specially-designed lens with the Scanner Nikkor ED glass elements that minimise chromatic aberration and image distortion. The 14-bit A/D input conversion and 8-/16-bit outputs meet the requirements of photographers and designers who want to digitise film images for printing or archiving.

The Super Coolscan 5000 ED model is designed for use by imaging professionals and can scan 35mm and APS films at a speed of 20 seconds per image. It features 16-bit A/D input conversion plus 16-bit output and includes a Multi-sample scanning feature that reveals hidden details in highlight and shadow areas. A new 2-line CCD sensor ensures sharp, colour-accurate scans and Nikon’s Colour Management System (Nikon CMS) is included to allow colour data to be manipulated in multiple colour spaces.
Nikon’s new Super Coolscan 9000 ED can scan a broad range of film sizes, including 35mm, 120/220, 16mm, 6×7 cm and electron microscope slides. Optical resolution of 4000dpi and 16-bit A/D conversion allow it to produce images with a broader dynamic range and outstanding detail. This model features an advanced Scanner Nikkor ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens and includes the Nikon Colour Management System (Nikon CMS). It is due for release in the first quarter of 2004.
The Nikon-developed LED illumination system used in the new Coolscan scanners minimises warm-up times and eliminates potential for heat damage of films. All models are bundled with Applied Science Fiction’s Digital ICE 4 Advanced, which includes the latest versions of Digital ICE (Image correction and Enhancement), Digital ROC (Restoration of Colour), Digital GEM (Grain Equalisation and Management) and the new Digital DEE (Dynamic Exposure Extender).
