November 2, 2005: Announced concurrently with the new Nikon D200 DSLR camera are a new digitally-optimised long-zoom lens and additions to Nikon’s Creative Lighting system.
The AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED lens is designed exclusively for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras and is not compatible with 35mm SLR bodies. Compact and lightweight the new 11.1x zoom lens is designed for everyday photography. On a Nikon DSLR camera, it covers a picture angle equivalent to a 27-300mm lens in 35mm format and built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) allows it to be used at slower shutter speeds – or smaller apertures – than would otherwise be possible. Two VR modes are provided: VR Normal Mode compensates for camera shake and includes automatic panning detection, as well as automatic tripod detection. VR Active Mode is designed to counteract vibration in situations such as when shooting from a moving vehicle or on the water.
The new lens also features the compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor), which combines fast and precise autofocusing with quiet zooming. Two ED glass elements and three aspherical lens elements ensure high-resolution, high-contrast images while minimising chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion. Maxwell Optical Industries will launch the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED in Australia in January, 2006. Pricing will be set closer to the release date. Nikon has also released details of the new Wireless Remote Speedlight SB-R200, a portable wireless remote flash unit for the Nikon Advanced Wireless Lighting system; and the Wireless Speedlight Commander SU-800, a commander to control up to three groups of i-TTL compatible wireless flash units (the SB-800, SB-600 or new SB-R200) when mounted on cameras compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System. The Wireless Remote Speedlight SB-R200 has a Guide Number of 14/46 (ISO 200, m/ft.), and can be attached to the front of the lens via the Attachment Ring SX-1, held in the photographer’s hand, or freely positioned by using the supplied Speedlight Stand AS-20.

The SB-R200 and SU-800 are also available as a kit for close-up lighting. Nikon Close-up Speedlight Commander Kit R1C1 consists of a Wireless Speedlight Commander SU-800, two Wireless Remote Speedlight SB-R200s, and an Attachment Ring SX-1 plus accessories such as the Extreme Close-Up Positioning Adapter SW-11, Colour Filter Set SJ-R200, Diffuser SW-12, and Flexible Arm Clip SW-C1. For photographers who want to use an SB-800 or the built-in Speedlights of the D200/D70s/D70 cameras as a commander, there is also the Nikon Close-up Speedlight Remote Kit R1, which comes without the SU-800. Maxwell Optical Industries will launch the Wireless Remote Speedlight SB-R200 and the Wireless Speedlight Commander SU-800 in Australia prior to Christmas. Pricing is yet to be determined.
