January 12, 2005: Epson’s latest Perfection 4990 Photo scanner supports 4800 dpi resolution, 48 bit in/out pixel depth and a high 4.0 optical density, making it ideal for professional photographers and serious enthusiasts.
With a scanning area of 216 x 297mm, the new model can scan documents up to A4 size as well as printed photographs and a selection of film sizes. The MatrixCCD and a revolutionary micro-lens in the scanning head make it possible to achieve an optical resolution of 4800 dpi without increasing the carriage size. It is easy to create and manage contact sheets with the Perfection 4990 Photo, as it can hold either 24 frames of 35mm stripfilm, eight 35mm slides, three medium format 120/220 (6 x 12 cm) film strips, or two 4 x 5 or 10 x 8 inch films at one time. The Perfection 4990 Photo scanner is also fast. A blue-toned lamp reduces the extended exposure time normally needed for negatives by compensating automatically for the colour shift produced by negative masking. USB 2.0 and IEEE1394 (FireWire) interfaces are provided for both Microsoft and Macintosh PCs.
The Perfection 4990 Photo is bundled with a comprehensive software suite that includes Epson’s Scan 2.6, Digital ICE (for dust and scratch removal), SilverFast SE6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and ABBYY FineReader 5.0 Sprint Plus OCR software. These applications contain tools for restoring old or damaged photographs plus some handy business-related facilities.
Expected to retail for $899, the Perfection 4990 Photo scanner is available through Epson dealers. For full product specifications go to www.epson.com.au.
