September 22, 2008: Nikon has unveiled a new prime lens, the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G, which is targeted at professional photographers and advanced amateurs who use Nikon FX-format cameras.
Consisting of eight elements in seven groups, the new lens weighs only 280 grams and measures 73.5 x 54 mm (diameter x length). It covers a picture angle of 46 degrees and has a focal length equivalent to 75mm in 35mm format when used with a DX-format Nikon camera body. This is an ideal focal length for portraiture and the large maximum aperture and nine-blade rounded diaphragm allow attractive background blurring to be captured.
A specially-developed optical system effectively corrects sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberration, while a built-in Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures smooth, quiet AF operation. Internal focusing enables use of angle-critical attachments, such as polarisers and graduate filters. Two focus modes are available – M/A (manual-priority autofocus) and M (manual focus).
The AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G has an RRP of $679. Supplied accessories include a 58mm snap-on front lens cap (LC-58), Rear lens cap (LF-1), Bayonet hood (HB-47) and Flexible lens pouch (CL-1013). The lens is threaded for 58mm diameter filters. For more information, visit www.nikon.com.au.
