May 26, 2008: Symple and Popperbox, a Sydney-based artists’ collective, will be holding an interactive live art event, NEOBOX, as a part of the NEOSYDNEY + NEOTOKYO exhibition, which precedes the opening of the 2008 Biennale of Sydney.
NEOSYDNEY + NEOTOKYO is a photographic exhibition of street pop photography, featuring images of the everyday, portraying a narrative of the life and heart of each city hub. It is the fourth exhibition in the Facetnate! series, which emerged from the Support Program for New Visual Artists that opened last year. This year’s exhibition has been inspired by the works of the hip Japanese photographer, Hiromix, who combines images of Tokyo’s alluring city lights and Japanese pop culture in a display that is embellished with neon lights and light boxes featuring snapshots of the two cities.

The free live art event will take place at The Japan Foundation Gallery on Level 1 of the Chifley Plaza, 2 Chifley Square, Sydney on Saturday 14 June between 11 am and 4 pm. Participants will be able to join emerging artists Kevin Vo and Haline Ly and use light pens as ‘magic wands’ to create trailing light patterns across the gallery walls. The display will be open between 5 and 25 June. For more information, visit http://www.jpf.org.au/02_events/facetnate/index.html.

Facetnate! will run until August this year, featuring a progression of varied solo exhibitions from each of five finalists. All five will be in the running for the Japan Foundation’s New Artist Award, which provides a return airfare to see the 2008 Yokohama Triennale, courtesy of Facetnate!‘s major sponsor Japan Airlines. Judging these works will be the Sydney Morning Herald’s Chief Art Critic, John McDonald. The winner will be announced in early September 2008.
