World Photography Organisation has announced 2019 category and national winners, with a powerful image by Marc Stapelberg winning the Australia National Award.
Untitled, by Marc Stapelberg, National Awards Winner, Australia, 2019 Sony World Photography Awards.
Marc Stapelberg is a photojournalist based in Lismore NSW. His winning image Untitled is a portrait of local indigenous man Steven Walker.
Stapleberg said of the award: ‘I am absolutely and completely humbled to be selected to be among such talented and profoundly beautiful image makers from across the world. There is not a person on the planet who has not been profoundly moved by a photograph they have seen. As children it expands our imagination and opens our eyes to the incredible planet we live on. This is the beauty of photography. To be able to contribute to this global archive of such significance is a real honour. Thank you to Sony World Photography Awards, the judges and fellow photographers’.
The winning image will be on display as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London from 18 April – 6 May, and in the 2019 Award book.
Stapleberg is one of 62 national award winners announced yesterday alongside 10 category winners.
The Professional and Student shortlist will be unveiled 26 March, and finally the overall and Professional category winners will be announced 17 April.
