January 9, 2007: Camera bag manufacturer, Lowepro, is celebrating its 40th anniversary through a philanthropic partnership with Polar Bears International (PBI), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the worldwide conservation of the polar bear.
The company will shortly announce a commemorative backpack, designed especially for professional photographers. A percentage of profits from the sale of the bag will go towards funding PBI research and the association’s ongoing global efforts to create awareness on climatic and environmental threats faced by the polar bear population. The world’s largest terrestrial carnivore, the polar bear bear is found on the Artic Coast and islands of five countries around the North Pole, including the United States (Alaska), Norway and Russia. It is the only species that still lives throughout its original range, with an estimated 20,000 still in the wild. It has already been impacted by human activities, such as loss of habitat and pollution, and climate change and global warming is causing the disappearance of sea ice from which the polar bears hunt their prey.
Polar Bears International’s primary goals are to conserve the world’s polar bears through research and education, and to serve as a central educational resource on polar bears worldwide. The organisation is run by volunteers so it is able to apply 100 percent of its revenue directly to research programming. details about the availability of Lowepro’s commemorative 40th anniversary backpack will be available shortly. In addition to the anniversary backpack, Lowepro will also celebrate in 2007 by sponsoring an international photography competition with 100 percent of the entry fees going to PBI. Information will be available at http://www.lowepro.com in coming weeks.
