Leica has announced a new addition to its rangefinder system, the Leica M-D (Typ 262), which comes without a rear monitor screen.

The new model complements the existing Leica M and M-P (Typ 240), the Leica M (Typ 262) and the Leica M Monochrome (Typ 246), bringing the number of digital M-Generation cameras to five. This is the first time Leica has dispensed with a monitor in full production cameras, although not the first time it has released a digital camera without a monitor; 600 copies of the Leica M Edition 60 were released to mark the 60th anniversary of Leica’s rangefinder camera system. The monitor screen has been replaced with a prominent ISO sensitivity setting dial, making it easier for users to access the most important camera settings: shutter speed, aperture, distance and sensitivity.
The new model is largely based upon the existing Leica M (Typ 262) but features brass top and bottom plates. It has the same 24-megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor that is dedicated exclusively to rangefinder-style still photography. The Maestro processor guarantees fast processing of captured image data, enabling exposures to be saved exclusively as RAW data in DNG format. The only shooting modes supported are P, A, S and M.
Another distinguishing feature in the Leica M-D (Typ 262) is a new quiet shutter mechanism, which ensures maximum inconspicuousness when shooting. In addition, the camera features a shutter cocking system that is particularly quiet in single exposure and enables a shutter release frequency of up to two frames per second. In continuous mode, the M-D has the same sequential shooting speed as its sister model and shoots up to three frames per second. Neither video recording nor Live View is supported.
The Leica M-D is now on sale at a local RRP of AU$8,900. The camera package also includes a real-leather carrying strap in full-grain cowhide. To find your local Leica dealer, visit http://en.leica-camera.com/Stores-Dealers/Leica-dealer-locator.
