LaCie’s Little Big Disk

January 9, 2006: LaCie has released a new series of portable hard disk drives with capacities up to 320 GB and throughput speeds up to 80 MB/second.
The new LaCie Little Big Disk drives come in four capacities: 160 GB/5400rpm (RRP $699), 200 GB/7200rpm (RRP $999), 240 GB/5400rpm (RRP $1169) and 320 GB/5400rpm (RRP $1499). All feature a 16 MB cache plus a triple interface consisting of two FireWire 800 (up to 82 MB/sec transfer speed), one FireWire 400 (up to 41 MB/sec) and one Hi Speed USB 2.0 (up to 34 MB/sec) connectors. The 320 GB unit is claimed as the biggest storage and backup upgrade available for any laptop, with about three times more capacity than other portable hard drives.
The four new drives are Windows and Mac compatible, requiring recent versions of each operating system plus an Intel Pentium II 350 MHz compatible processor or greater or Mac G3, G4, G5 processor or greater plus 128MB RAM. Each drive measures 40 x 85 x 140 mm (WxHxD) and weighs 650 grams. They are supplied with: FireWire 800 (9-to-9 pin) cable; FireWire 400 (6-to-6 pin) cable; Hi-Speed USB 2.0 cable (USB 1.1 compatible); AC Power Adaptor Kit for use with low-powered hubs or laptops (includes AC adaptor and local power adaptor); Quick Install Guide; LaCie Utilities CD-ROM with User Manual and removable drive stand foot kit.

LaCie has also unveiled its Rugged Hard Drive, a tough and speedy portable hard drive for people on the go. Available in 80 GB (RRP $399), 100 GB (RRP $689) and 120 GB (RRP $649) capacities the new drives have a sturdy aluminium shell and rubber bumper to protect them from table-height drops. They also come with FireWire 800/400 and USB connections plus a USB power-sharing cable for low powered USB hubs/computers.
