May 24, 2007: Eastman Kodak has announced plant to release a 5-megapixel CMOS camera and provide sensors for several Motorola phones, at the same time phasing out low-end digicam production.

The new Kodak CMOS camera is scheduled for release for the Northern Hemisphere ‘holiday season’, with the Motorola-Kodak cameraphone with a Kodak CMOS chip following close behind, according to a report on C/Net News. Kodak is reported to have been developing a CMOS chip with technology from IBM. No product details have been released for the new releases thus far. Kodak President, Antonio Perez, is reported to have told a JPMorgan Technology Conference in Boston on Monday, “We’re going to be abandoning the low-end of the digital camera business. As everyone knows, we’re not making much money there. Now we have our own CMOS sensors, so you might see us going down in price because we can make money.”
