June 2, 2010: Kayell has been appointed as local distributor for GigaPan Systems products.
GigaPan Systems technology is a commercial spin off between researchers at NASA and Carnegie Mellon University. The tripod-mounted motorised devices are used to capture high-resolution panoramic images that can cover up to 360 degrees. GigaPan Epic devices mount on normal tripods and contain micro-motors to pan the mounted camera up-and-down and side-to-side, taking hundreds of pictures. Once programmed, the photographer selects the top-left and bottom-right image points and the GigaPan Epic device will shoot the required images automatically, using the solenoid-activated robotic arm to depress the shutter button.
Two models are available: the GigaPan Epic which is for compact and point-and-shoot cameras and the GigaPan Epic Pro which works with professional DSLR cameras and interchangeable lenses up to 4.5 kg in weight. Both models are supplied with GigaPan Stitch software, which is used to position and merge the recorded images. Prices range between $765 and $1495.
