May 22, 2009: Two DSLR cameras with 36 x 24mm image sensors have taken out the major awards at this year’s Japanese Camera Grand Prix.

Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II has been maned as the winner of the Camera of the Year in the Japanese Camera Grand Prix 2009 with the Nikon D700 taking out the Readers’ Award. The awards are sponsored by the Camera Journal Press Club Japan (CJPC), comprising thirteen photography and camera publications (as of May 2009).

The winner was selected by a panel consisting of chief editors of CJPC member publications, academic experts, technical writers, professional photographers, and representatives from photo-related organisations. The choice was made from 184 new cameras that were released between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. This year marks the eighth time in the 26-year history of the awards that Canon has taken out the top position.
Nikon’s D700 was awarded the Camera Grand Prix 2009 Readers’ Award, which was assessed on the basis of a vote by members of the general public. This year’s Camera Press Club Awards, which were decided by members of the CJPC council, went to the Panasonic Lumix G1 and Casio High Speed Exilim EX-FC100 cameras.
