The new technology, which has been included in high-volume applications for use on PCs, servers, kiosks, has now been released as an embedded version in the firmware inside digital cameras and printers. The process is completely transparent to the user and automatic in operation. All the user has to do is set the camera to the red-eye reduction mode and the recognition software does the rest. The software not only detects red eye in images, but can also avoid false detections of potentially deceptive ‘red herrings’ such as polka dots and Christmas tree lights. Developer, FotoNation (www.fotonation.com) is a research and development company with a strong technical and intellectual property foundation, dedicated to providing imaging and connectivity solutions for the digital photography industry. The company has offices in San Francisco, CA, Galway, Ireland and Bucharest, Romania.
The Coolpix 5200 will be available in Australia in May, while the Coolpix 4200 will arrive in June. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed. Details of both cameras can be found at www.maxwell.com.au.
