Open to photo-based artists, professional photographers and photo enthusiasts, the competition has four award categories: Portrait, Landscape, Mobile and Student. Entries are evaluated by a panel of judges, which will review each entry on an anonymous basis to ensure each work is judged purely on artistic merit. Judges include contemporary photographers, international picture editors and curators of major institutions. The Head On Photo Awards represent a global selection of the best work from emerging and established photographers and presents an opportunity to have work showcased to thousands across Sydney and the world.

Winners will be announced at the launch of Head On Photo Festival (Friday 3 May at UNSW Art and Design, Paddington campus) and exhibited at the Festival Hub in Paddington, Paddington Reservoir Gardens and NSW Parliament House during the Festival. Running from Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 May 2019, Head On Photo Festival is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious photo festivals. Since it began in 2010, it has evolved to include a wide range of exhibitions from world-renowned photographers, innovative workshops run by international professionals and critically acclaimed mentors and community events aimed at everyone from enthusiasts to devout collectors.
