June 18, 2007: Fujifilm Australia and the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney are among a group of international sponsors supporting a photographic project to coincide with a four-week Architecture and Urban Design conference being held in Johannesburg, South Africa in June/July 2007.
Delegates to the Global Studio (GS) conference will document the lives and living environments of two of Johannesburg’s largest slums, Alexandra and Diepsloot, working in direct collaboration with the local community. Fujifilm Australia has donated 150 single-use cameras that will be used for this project, which aims to empower the local population to help them improve their own lives and physical environment. Photographs taken during the period will be exhibited around the world in the home countries of GS participants, with proceeds from their sale being donated back into the communities where they were taken.
The photographic component of Global Studio has been inspired by the Academy Award winning documentary “Born into Brothels” & has received guidance from the organisation “Kids with Cameras” in New York City. Full details of the project can be found at www.theglobalstudio.com.
