March 14, 2007: Getty Images, one of the world’s largest photo libraries, has acquired Scoopt, a collector and distributor of images and videos captured by eyewitnesses to newsworthy events.
The acquisition will see Getty Images investing in “technology upgrades and other enhancements to Scoopt in order to make the site more accessible to customers, and to better position it for future growth”, according to a report in PMA International’s Daily Newsline. While Getty Images integrates Scoopt into its organization, the Scoopt team will continue to operate out of its current base in Glasgow, Scotland. Photographers who submit images to Scoopt will retain copyright in their shots, while granting the agency a 12-month exclusive distribution license that allows the images to be re-licensed to one or more publishers.
Photographers who contribute images to Scoopt will benefit from “increased visibility and an extensive network of media contacts, earning a significant percentage of the value for each license issued”, the PMA report says. Submission guidelines and additional details about Scoopt’s growing photographer community can be found at www.scoopt.com. Images and video from Scoopt that meet Getty Images’ editorial quality standards will be published exclusively at www.gettyimages.com/editorial.
