May 17, 2006: Tokina unveiled four new DX lenses at the recent Photo Imaging Expo 2006 in Tokyo, announcing plans to release them in the third quarter of this year.
The new lenses are designed specifically for DSLR cameras with “APS-C-sized” sensors and will not be usable on full-frame SLR cameras – film or digital. The press release this information is derived from is in Japanese so we have been unable to obtain full specifications for any of the new lenses. No details have been released about exact release dates or whether the new lenses will be released globally. No information has been supplied on which lens mounts will be supported, although it is safe to speculate that Canon, Nikon and Pentax and, possibly, Minolta/Sony will be included.
Widest of the new lenses is the 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 DX fisheye zoom, which covers a diagonal field of view of 180 degrees at its widest angle of view. Specifications for this lens are similar to those of the existing Pentax 10-17mm fisheye zoom lens. It will offer a focal length range equivalent to 15-25.5mm on Nikon and Pentax cameras and 16-27.2mm on Canon cameras.
