January 16, 2008: FotoNation, which developed the face recognition systems used in most digicams, has now announced a new technology, FaceTime, which helps photographers to take good self portraits.

Offered as an add-on module to FotoNation’s FaceTracker technology it provides a new way of triggering a camera’s shutter, which delays activation until a face is detected in the scene. Once the face is detected, a count-down timer is initiated giving photographers time to relax and compose themselves. The technology is available for licensing immediately for both digicams and camera-phones. It should begin to appear in digital cameras around mid-year.
