July 2, 2010: Sony has released a firmware update for its Alpha NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras, adding several performance enhancements plus 3D Sweep Panorama functionality.

With this new function, both cameras can record a high-speed burst of frames that are automatically combined inside the camera to create a seamless stereo pair. Sweep Panorama shots can then be enjoyed in 3D when the camera is connected to a compatible 3D TV set. Other enhancements provided by the new firmware include:
– Improvements to normal 2D Sweep Panorama;
– Decreased power drain when the camera is switched off; and
– Faster start-up in low light conditions.
The update is only needed for NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras with Version 01 firmware currently installed. Cameras shipped with Version 02 firmware or higher are already updated with the new features. Owners can find out what firmware version they’re currently running by selecting [MENU]/[SETUP]/[VERSION]. The new update is available for free download from the Sony Australia website (http://www.sony.com.au/support/download/405144),
