An exhibition of images by Iranian-born, Melbourne-based photo and imaging artist, Hoda Afshar, opens at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney on 2 September, 2023.
One of the images from the exhibition: Untitled #6 from the series Speak the wind 2015–22 © Hoda Afshar
Titled Hoda Afshar: A Curve is a Broken Line the exhibition draws its theme from a line in a poem by Kaveh Akbar and presents photographs and videos that are emotionally embroiled in the world they depict. Many of the images date back to the days when Afshar lived in Tehran, Iran, where she photographed her friends at illegal parties, a high-risk activity. Since then she has been deeply engaged with the politics of image-making.
Hoda Afshar will discuss her work with curator Isobel Parker Philip at a special event at the gallery on Wednesday 13 September between 6.30 and 7.15 p.m. This event is free to attend and no booking is required.
The exhibition will be on display until 21 January, 2024. Entry is free of charge.
