Winners of the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs) were announced at a gala dinner organised by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) in Sydney on Tuesday evening.

The AIPP is Australia’s leading professional photography membership body. Founded in 1963, the AIPP is a not-for-profit organisation run voluntarily for and by professional photographers and industry representatives, who seek to set a standard of excellence within the photographic industry. It strives to promote and maintain the highest standards of professional competence and business ethics in the industry and has a binding Code of Professional Practice for members, as well as providing ongoing education via seminars, workshops and events

More than 250 of the country’s best professional photographers attended this year’s event and this year’s competitions attracted a total of 1647 entries. Among the entrants, 668 were awarded silvers, 268 awarded silver distinctions, 107 awarded a gold and 14 awarded a gold distinction. The coveted title of Australian 2019 Professional Photographer of the Year was awarded to Tasmanian photographer Matt Palmer for his powerful landscape images.
