January 29, 2007: Photographers across Australia are being invited to submit works to the 2007 Head On Alternative Portraits photographic portrait competition.
Now in its fourth year, Head On was founded in 2004 by photographer, Moshe Rosenzveig, as an alternative to other photographic portrait competitions. The first show was organised hastily with a real community spirit, no budget or prize money and ultimately attracted thousands of visitors. The show, which displays a selection of the best entries, has undergone exponential growth and has established itself as one of Australia’s major photographic portrait exhibitions. The competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers ø¢â‚¬” and all types of work can be accepted as entries. Images selected over the past three years ranged from digitally produced documentary portraiture to evocative portraits produced with the most basic picture taking device of all – the pinhole camera.

Prizes will be awarded for the best three images. Prizes include state of the art Canon EOS 5D digital SLR (x2) plus a lens each, Canon professional A3+ printer Pixma Pro9000, ACDSee Pro Digital Asset Management software (x3) and books from Focal Press. Total value of prizes is about $14,000.

In 2007 the show will be mounted at one of Australia’s major photography galleries, the Australian Centre for Photography and then travel to Daylesford Foto Biennale in June. The judges this year will be Sandy Edwards, an esteemed photographer, curator and past director of Stills Gallery, Gene Sherman, director of Sherman Galleries and Moshe Rosenzveig, Head On founder and curator. Full details of the competition and exhibition plus the entry form can be found at http://www.headon.com.au. Deadline for submissions is 16 March 2007.
