March 27, 2007: The Tweed River Art Gallery is seeking entries for the 2007 Olive Cotton Award for photographic portraiture, which is open to photographers living and working in Australia.
The award celebrates the life of Olive Cotton, a pioneering Australian photographer, who worked from a studio in Cowra from 1864 until her death in 2003. Cotton’s iconic photographs are shown in Australia’s main art galleries and presented in major histories of photography in Australia. Entries must be new portraits, completed after 30 March, 2006. Only still, two-dimensional prints will be accepted with a maximum size limit of 1.0 x 1.5 metres. Prints must be made on archivally stable media and presented in a form that allows them to be hung on or pinned to the Gallery walls.
A limit of one entry per person applies and all entries attract a fee of $25 (incl. GST) to cover handling costs. This fee is not refundable. All entries must be received by the Gallery or postmarked by Australia Post by 5 pm on Friday, 25 May, 2007. After an initial screening process, a list of pictures selected for the competition and associated exhibition will be posted online at www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/artgallery. Full details of the competition and entry forms are available now from this website.
Selected works will be judged by Richard Moore, Executive Director of the 2007 Melbourne International Film Festival, who has a long and distinguished career in the Australian film and television industry. Judging will take place between 16 August (when the exhibition opens to the public) and 19 August, when the exhibition is officially opened. Pictures will remain on display until 7 October, 2007.
