Entries have opened for The Sydney Morning Herald Photos1440 Challenge, which offers winners a chance to experience life as a photojournalist and win prizes like a Canon EOS 5D Mark III Pro Kit (with EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens) or an internship working with The Sydney Morning Herald photo department.

This year for the first time the winning entrants from each category will be displayed as part ofThe Sydney Morning Herald exhibition – Photos1440, Capturing the minutes of the day. The exhibition is held in conjunction with World Press Photo at the State Library of NSW from June 29 to July 28, 2013. Both exhibitions are presented by Canon Australia. The Photos1440 Challenge retail partner is Digital Camera Warehouse.

Registered entrants will be given a Photographic Assignment Brief and have up to five weeks to complete. The earlier entrants register, the longer they have to work on their winning photo essay. The Photographic Assignment Brief will be sent to entrants after registration. The brief will be open to interpretation and will be judged on originality, composition, photographic technique and the entrant’s ability to tell a story through their photos. Each entrant may submit a minimum of four, to a maximum of seven images for the assignment. Assignments will be judged as a photo essay.

  • General registration only is $20 inc GST and is open to anyone that is 16 years of age or older.
  • Student registration is $15 inc GST and for any entrant that is a current tertiary student. Students must be able to provide proof of student status.
  • Junior registration is $15 inc GST and is open to anyone that is 15 years of age or younger.  
  • The  Photos1440 Photographic Workshop will be on Sunday June 2, 2013 at 33 Playfair Street, The Rocks, Sydney. Tickets to the workshop are $55 inc GST and it is open to all ages.

Once registration is complete, a unique order number displayed at the top of the tax invoice, will be emailed to entrants confirming   payment and registration in the event. Entrants must  quote this unique order number  when  emailing their images for judging or in any correspondence.  Only one registration is permitted per person. Joint entries will not be accepted. Registrations are not transferable
