March 1, 2007: Entries for the 2007 Head On independent national photographic portrait competition will close on 16 March so portrait photographers are advised to finalise their submissions soon.
Founded in 2004, Head On has established itself as one of Australia’s major photographic portrait exhibitions and attracts thousands of visitors each year; both to the shot itself and to the online gallery of images. Head On represents a vibrant, diverse cross-section of new and traditional photographic practices from emerging and established photographers alike. Images selected over the past 3 years have engaged processes from digital to film and documentary to staged, using devices ranging from contemporary to traditional, such as the pinhole camera. It now boasts sponsorship from industry leaders such as Canon and Adobe.
This years judges include Sandy Edwards, esteemed photographer, curator and past director of Stills Gallery; Gene Sherman, director of Sherman Galleries and founder of recently announced Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation and Moshe Rosenzveig, Head On founder and curator. Past winners of the prize include: photojournalists Stephen Dupont and Herald photographer Stephen Siewert; past Citigroup Portrait Prize winner, Greg Weight; commercial photographer, Anthony Browel; fine art photographers Patricia Casey and Sally McInerney and Melbourne photographer, Samantha Everton.
This year’s show will be exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, one of Australia’s major photographic galleries from 19 April, before travelling to the Daylesford Biennale in Victoria where it will be on show from 2 June to 1 July. Past winners’ images can be found at www.headon.com.au. For more information, contact Moshe Rosenzveig on 0411-068650 or 02-96655865.
