December 2, 2004: Nikon’s latest compact digital cameras, the 4-Megapixel/8.3x Zoom Coolpix 4800 and the 5-Megapixel/3x Zoom Coolpix 5100, are now available in Australian stores.
Offering a focal range equivalent to a 36-300mm lens in 35mm format, the Coolpix 4800 is the smallest long zoom lens camera on the market. The Coolpix 4800 focuses down to just 1cm and features fast autofocusing across its zoom range plus a new AE-BSS (Auto Exposure BSS) function that causes the camera to capture up to 10 images and automatically save the best one to memory. RRP for this model is $699.
The Coolpix 5100, which will sell for $599, has a 3x zoom lens that covers a focal length range equivalent to 35-105mm in 35mm format and can focus as close as 4cm. Compact and easy to use, it is compatible with a wide range of rechargeable and disposable batteries, including readily available alkaline batteries. An AC adapter is available as an optional accessory.
Both cameras feature 15 selectable Scene modes, covering subjects as diverse as sunsets, fireworks and portraits. Four of these Scene Modes offer a Scene Assistance function that helps novice users correctly frame the subject. Users can also record TV-quality movies with sound with both cameras. Both cameras employ Nikon’s 256-segment matrix metering system, which has evolved from more than 20 years of development in a range of award-winning SLR cameras and ensures accurate exposure in a wide range of conditions.
The new models come with a multi-voltage charger and rechargeable batteries. Full details can be found at www.maxwell.com.au.
