September 3, 2007: Brenton Edwards from Australia is the Overall Winner of the 2007 Commonwealth Photographic Awards, an annual competition organised by the Commonwealth Press Union.
Edwards’ winning image (reproduced above) shows a young boy held aloft on the razor sharp points of several swords and spears. It was chosen as the best representative of this year’s theme: ‘Achievement‘. The photographer, who works for The Advertiser in Adelaide, is one of a number of photographers from around the Commonwealth who won commendations in this year’s contest. Regional Winners include:

Europe: Caroline Irby (UK)
South Asia: Suresh Narayanan (India) South East Asia: Lee Ee Cheng (Malaysia)
Highly Commended awards went to Vladimira Bajerovska (South Africa), Pius Utomi Ekpei (Nigeria), Pillay Vythilingum Kadrewvel (Mauritius), Lee Griffith (Australia), Marie Micallef (Australia), Andrew Sole (Australia), Todd VanSickle (British Virgin Islands), John Angerson (UK), Simon Renilson (UK), Rene Rossignaud (Malta), Debesh Mukhopadhyay (India), Srinivasa Reddy (India) and Pranabendu Samajpati (India). Runners Up included Mkhulisi Magongo (Swaziland), Michael Nsubuga (Uganda), Raymond Preston (South Africa), Shafayet Hoosain Apollo (Bangladesh), D N Baraskar (India), Arindam Datta (India), Dheeraj Paul (India), Sukanta Sinha (India), Brian Harris (UK), Allen Markey (UK) and Louis McCullagh (UK).
The Canberra Times/CPU Young Photographer Prize was awarded to Masi Losi of South Africa. ) Roxanne van Winsen (South Africa) received a Highly Commended award and the runner up was Amit Madheshiya (India).
In the ‘Three Pictures – One Story’ section of the competition, the winner was Sam Lim Kien Hock of Malaysia. Chetan Soni (India) received a Highly Commended award and runners-up were Richard Human (UK), Susan MacCleod (UK) and Astrid Volzke (Australia). The Awards are sponsored by The Canberra Times Australia, Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, The Commonwealth Foundation, Commonwealth Secretariat, The Globe & Mail Canada, The Guardian Foundation and The Royal Commonwealth Society. An exhibition of all the winners’ photographs will be held in London at The Commonwealth Club (25 Northumberland Avenue) from 10 September to 31 October 2007.
