September 2003: Canon’s new i865 Bubble Jet printer, which should be available late this month, replaces the popular i850 model and features PictBridge compatibility, direct to CD-R printing, fast print speeds, borderless photo printing, 4800 x 1200 dpi resolution and Canon’s advanced five-colour individual ink system.
The new model is the first under-$400 printer to include a direct to CD printing feature as standard. Users simply place a CD-R with a printable surface into the dedicated CD-R tray, and with the supplied Canon CD-LabelPrint software, a colourful and professional looking CD-R is printed in around a minute.
Other handy features include support for the new industry standard PictBridge technology for digital camera direct printing. This allows owners of PictBridge enabled cameras or digital camcorders, regardless of brand, to print pictures directly from the camera via a USB cable. The i865 is also backwards compatible with all Bubble Jet Direct compatible cameras.
The i865 Bubble Jet has a resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi and its print head features Canon’s advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology with a total of 1,856 nozzles that deliver prescribed volume ink droplets in sizes as small as two and five picolitres. Estimated print speeds are up to 23 pages-per-minute (ppm) in black text and up to 16 ppm in colour. Separate tanks of dye-based photo-grade black, magenta, cyan and yellow inks are used for photo printing and there’s a pigment-based black ink tank for printing text.
A special photo paper tray for 4 x 6 inch photo paper allows the i865 printer to cater for both A4 or 5 x 7-inch media as well as snapshot-sized photo paper so users can alternate between printing modes and printing sizes without stopping to change paper. The photo paper cassette has its own dust cover to protect the media while it’s loaded in the printer. Borderless printing is supported in all three print sizes.
The i865 Bubble Jet comes with a comprehensive Canon printer software bundle and is compatible with both Windows and Mac PCs. It is expected to retail for $399. Full details can be found at www.canon.com.au.
