May 3, 2007: Canon has released details of a new high-definition digital camcorder that aims to give consumers superior image quality and creative control.
The new HV20, which is priced at $1999, has a 5.27 x 3.96mm CMOS image sensor and primary colour filter, which allows it to deliver 1080i standard digital video (HDV) and 3.1-megapixel still images. A Canon HD Video lens provides 10x optical zoom capability, Super Range optical image stabilisation (OIS) and Instant AF using 9-point AF. For video, users can choose between interlaced and progressive scan output, the latter delivering results that simulate cinematic filming. A built-in video light and advanced accessory shoe allow users to shoot in a wide range of light levels. Microphone and headphone jacks are provided, along with an HDMI output terminal for connection to HDTV sets.
Thirteen AE shooting modes are available, from full auto to aperture and shutter priority settings. The HV20 also supports simultaneous shooting to MiniSD cards while video is being recorded. A focus dial and backlight correction button are provided and DiG!C DV II processing delivers excellent detail, colour and tonal reproduction. Continuous shooting of still s is supported at frame rates up to 4 fps. PictBridge direct printing is also supported.
