September 17, 2008: Concurrent with the release of details of the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera, Canon has also announced a new EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM lens.
Designed for cameras with 35mm-sized imagers, this fast professional lens claims to be the brightest in its category. It features two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) to minimise lateral chromatic aberration plus GMo (glass-moulded) aspheric lenses to suppress distortion and spherical aberration. Only environmentally friendly lead-free glass used in this lens. Consisting of 13 elements in 10 groups, it has a maximum aperture of f/1.4 and minimum aperture of f/22. Closest focusing distance is 0.25 metres (25 cm).

Exterior and interior optical surfaces are coated to minimise flare and ghosting and the lens is constructed to resist the effects of water and dust, allowing it to be used in harsh weather conditions. A high-speed CPU, optimised AF algorithm, rear internal focusing and ring USM drive ensure fast and accurate autofocusing. Manual focusing is enabled, even in AF mode. Supplied accessories include front and rear lens caps and the EW-83K lens hood.
The new lens is due for release later in the year. For more information, visit www.canon.com.au.
